Algeria, I'm told,  is Spanish and Portuguese for "joy" or "jubilation". It is also the name of one of Cirque du Soleil's touring shows, and one that I desperately want to see at some point. So far, I have only seen Dralion, and thus began my love affair with Cirque du Soliel.

Cirque du Soleil is a breathtaking showcase of human capability physically, musically and visually. The amazing combination of music, costume, acrobatics, characters and movement fascinates and uplifts me. These marks on a page cannot possibly convey the complete and utter enchantment of going to see one of their productions.

This video below is the song 'Alegria'. I really like it, and hope you will too.

Here is my attempt at explaining the title of my blog:

It is my favourite line from one of my favourite songs, To Build a Home by The Cinematic Orchestra. I chose it for a number of reasons:
a) My friend Naomi suggested it, and she's good at coming up with this sort of thing
b) It implies interaction with the world, which summarises pretty well what a blog is
c) It is metaphorical.... and thus makes me feel clever, in a petty attempt to sound deep

Here is my explanation the title of this post:

Since the title of the blog was a line from a song that resonates with me, I thought I may as well make the post titles song lines as well. This line from Laura Marling's song Ghosts, and I thought it was suitable for a first blog post... unlocking the lock that kept my musings dark to the world until now :)

My cat and I are settled cosily in front of the fireplace that is still glowing slightly. It is restful and Sunday-evening-ish. Before the sudden urge to post something on my as yet unused blog hit me, I was reading Hard Times by Charles Dickens and it struck me how wonderfully vivid the characters Dickens describes are. They are so richly described and their tone and expression are so real that one can almost hear the characters speaking. Seriously, if you haven't read any Dickens I would seriously recommend it.... and even if you don't like it you can get a kick out of making a spoonerism of his name, which turns out to be Dahl's Chickens.

For those who are ignorant of what a spoonerism is, allow me to enlighten you. Apparently there was this Oxford don who was prone to switching the first syllable of words in sentences (e.g. "You were fighting a liar in the quadrangle", meaning that you were lighting a fire in the quadrangle, or "A well-boiled icicle" meaning "A well-oiled bicycle"). Nifty, hey? After he died his old college named a room after him, naming it the Rooner Spoom.

So here are my rinsignificant amblings, daking their mebut into the this wunny old forld... if you still haven't got the hang of this spoonerism thing, I mean insignificant ramblings, making their debut and this funny old world.
